Veteran Malcolm could make surprise appearance in C&G final CricInfo - 31 August 2001
Former England fast bowler Devon Malcolm could win a surprise recall to the Leicestershire side for the C&G Trophy final against Somerset at Lord's tomorrow. The 38-year-old paceman has played only once in the Midlanders' route to the final but his ability to perform on the big occasion has brought him into contention for a final place. But if the veteran is selected, it will mean no place in the Leicestershire starting line-up for Scott Boswell who picked up four wickets in the semi-final against Lancashire. Coach Jack Birkinshaw said: "It would be a very difficult decision because Scott has played in just about every match. He did exceptionally well in the semi-final and has done a good job for us. "When it comes to the big games, though, you just think about Devon and Lord's on the big stage and he might be able to give us an important couple of wickets with the new ball. "Devon can still bowl magic balls even now and it's going to be a very important decision to make." The next few days are vital for Leicestershire who, after tomorrow's final, face two National League games in the space of four days and, if they win them both, they will clinch the title. A double success for Leicestershire could be vital in helping keep England's latest recruit, Jimmy Ormond, at the club. The fast bowler has yet to sign a new contract for Leicestershire. Captain Vince Wells said: "Success and recognition is important for a smaller club. This is a great club to play for but because it's smaller than the Test ground counties, it gets harder and harder each year to keep your best players. "It's so important from our point of view that our players do get recognised because they will see that it's worth staying. "If they can enjoy their cricket here, challenge for trophies and also get picked for England as well then there is no need for them to go anywhere else. "In the past, a few players have felt the need to leave to fulfil that ambition but hopefully we can convince them now that there is no need to leave."
