A superb all round display from Australian Test speedster Brett Lee sparked New South Wales' 135-run thrashing of South Australia in their one day cricket clash here today.

After the removal of star batsmen Michael Slater and Michael Bevan for ducks, Lee smashed 44 not out to guide NSW to 7-238 in its 50 overs.

He then backed up with a fiery 1-31 off 10 overs as the Redbacks slumped to be all out for 103 in the 38th over.

NSW picked up a bonus point for achieving a run rate more than 1.25 times that of SA.

The Blues started the match poorly, with Slater and Bevan both out for first ball ducks to SA paceman Paul Wilson in the opening three balls of the game.

Wilson, playing his first match of the season after knee surgery in October, had a dream start helped by early assistance from the pitch and loose NSW batting.

Slater charged Wilson on the first ball he faced, the second of the day, and was bowled. Then next ball Bevan was caught behind slashing at a ball outside off stump.

Wilson picked up Brad Haddin (10) in his third over to make it 3-16 and finished with 3-35 from his 10 overs.

Despite a top score of 62 from No.4 Michael Clarke, the Blues were still in trouble at 7-162 in the 42nd over.

But Lee, the only current Test player in the match, and Shawn Bradstreet (46 not out) had an unbroken 73-run eighth wicket stand from 53 balls to boost the Blues' total.

Lee was particularly damaging, his unbeaten 44 coming off 28 balls and included two fours and three sixes.

Lee said the key to the match was NSW's ability to bounce back from the key dismissals of Bevan and Slater.

"There's times when some blokes will have an off day and won't score runs," Lee said.

"We rely on Bevan, but he just can't go out there and score every time."

South Australia, in sharp contrast, never looked like getting close to the NSW total once Lee and fellow opening bowler Stuart Clark skittled the top order.

Clark took 3-25 in his 10 over spell, including SA captain and top scorer Darren Lehmann (29) while Lee claimed the other key scalp of Greg Blewett (11).

Nathan Bracken (2-25), Shane Lee (1-8) and leg spinner Stuart MacGill (2-12) all chipped in to wrap up an SA innings that failed to manage a partnership higher than 16.

SA coach Greg Chappell admitted the lack of consistent contributions from batsmen other than Lehmann and Blewett was a big worry.

"It's a major problem. There are no short solutions, unfortunately," Chappell said.

"We have got a limited pool of players to pick from and we have got to really make the most of what we've got."
