New Zealand have really taken the attack to the Aussies this morning. They have shown their intent from the word go, with aggressive running and positive footwork – getting on the front foot at all times. Lou Vincent, well, he played another special innings. Better even than his first knock. He's a real find.

Crucially they didn't ignore the golden rule on this wicket, which is to allow yourself time to get in. But because they were so decisive in their footwork they were able to steal the quick singles without taking many risks. There was one run-out chance, but other than that they kept things ticking over nicely, and after half-an-hour or so they were well enough set to let rip with the big drives.

Since Vincent's dismissal Sinclair and Richardson have been solid, but both of them are under a bit of pressure. Sinclair especially – he's been pretty ponderous this series and he might feel the pinch if runs start to flow at the other end. Richardson has been better organised than in the first innings, where his footwork and shot selection was bit lazy.

Shane Warne has bowled really well, though that's hardly good news for Australia, as Vettori will enjoy himself tomorrow. The surface has loosened quite a bit overnight and the ball is starting to bite now. The fast men have banged the ball in and kept things tight from one end, but they aren't getting anything from the pitch. The Kiwis have left the ball well outside off stump, and frankly whatever target they are after, they will get it with ease.

It's still not curtains for Australia, but their coffin is definitely being built. Realistically they will be facing a target of 450 in 105 overs, and there's no doubt that Steve Waugh's first inclination will be to go for it. But to get there, or anywhere near, the Australians will have to bat exactly as the New Zealanders did in the first innings. Yesterday they wanted to go for it too early, and got out before they were fully set.
