Humiliated Zimbabwe hit new low
Wisden CricInfo staff - December 8, 2001

  • Zimbabwe's total of 38 is the lowest in one-day international history. The previous lowest was 43, made by Pakistan against West Indies at Cape Town on February 25, 1993. Before today, Zimbabwe's lowest total was 94, against Pakistan at Sharjah in 1996-97.
  • Chaminda Vaas took 8 for 19, a new record for best bowling figures in one-day internationals. Muttiah Muralitharan's 7 for 30, against India at Sharjah in 2000-01, was the previous best.

  • Vaas's haul included a hat-trick when he dismissed Stuart Carlisle, Craig Wishart and Tatenda Taibu with the third, fourth and fifth balls of his sixth over. It was the first one-day hat-trick by a Sri Lankan, and the 13th in all.

  • The Zimbabwe innings lasted 15.4 overs, making it the shortest completed one-day innings. Pakistan's 43 had taken 19.5 overs.

  • With Sri Lanka reaching their target in a mere 4.2 overs, the match lasted precisely 20 overs, another one-day record. Previously, the shortest match was the one at Cape Town, which lasted 32.2 overs.

  • The match aggregate of 78 runs was also a new low - passing the 88 managed by Pakistan and West Indies in that match at Cape Town.

  • Excluding the easy pickings of Bangladesh, this was Zimbabwe's 22nd consecutive one-day defeat, a run that started against West Indies at Adelaide on January 25, 2001.
