It only took the New Zealand bowlers 45 minutes to wrap up an innings victory, after a matchwinning spell of 5 for 7 from Chris Cairns decimated the Bangladesh batting. Cairns finished with figures of 7 for 53. The entire match lasted just 181.4 overs - the equivalent of just over two days' play - after the first two days were completely washed out.

Bangladesh began the morning on 90 for 4, but things immediately looked bleak for them when Cairns had Mohammad Al Sahariar caught behind off the seventh ball of the day for 53 (90 for 5).

Cairns struck again in his next over, inducing captain Khaled Mashud to edge straight to Stephen Fleming at first slip (98 for 6). The following delivery produced a near carbon-copy dismissal, with Khaled Mahmud edging to Mathew Sinclair at second slip (98 for 7).

The hat-trick wasn't to be, but Cairns and Shane Bond took little time to wrap up the Bangladesh tail with the last three wickets falling for ten runs. It was the 12th time Cairns had taken a Test five-for, although the Man of the Match award went instead to New Zealand opener Mark Richardson for his 143.

This was Bangladesh's fourth innings defeat in their eight Tests and, to add insult to injury, they were fined 5% of their match fee by referee Barry Jarman for slow over rates.

The second Test starts at Wellington on Wednesday.
