Otago looking to complete Trophy double against Auckland Warwick Larkins - 8 February 2001
Otago will be looking to quickly take the wickets of two potential troublemakers for them in the Auckland batting lineup to set themselves up for another outright victory in their Shell Trophy match at Carisbrook today. Auckland finished the third day yesterday with only a 95-run lead with four wickets in hand. Two of those wickets, Tama Canning and Kyle Mills are potentially troublesome wickets given their recent batting performances. Mills especially has shown an outstanding attitude when batting while Canning stole a vital Shell Cup match from Otago at Alexandra earlier this year. Should Otago pick them up early then the chance for a win must be high. Otago started the third day yesterday by picking up the nine runs required to achieve first innings points and went on to achieve a first innings lead of 62. Bowling for Auckland, Chris Drum took three for 60, Brooke Walker three for 64, Kyle Mills one for 69, Andre Adams one for 49, Tama Canning one for 60 and Blair Pocock one for 32 to all share in the Otago spoils. It's not very often in any Auckland setting out to erase the deficit of 62 soon found themselves in trouble when Tim McIntosh was dismissed with the total at two. Some resistance was then seen from Auckland but by the time they were " on the board " a second was down and soon after a third . John Aiken scored a good 46 and Blair Pocock a similar 41 but no-one else really took control of a depleted Otago attack. Tama Canning and Kyle Mills present a problem for Otago for although they are currently both in their teens they have the abiltity to go on and match winning scores for their team. Warren McSkimming was off the field with a groin strain during much of Auckland's innings but not before he had taken one for 16. Bradley Scott had one wicket for 31 and Craig Pryor one for 27 but it was the off spinner Paul Wiseman, with a massive 32 overs- 10 maidens- 41 runs -and 3 wickets, who was the trump card for the Southerners. Otago appear to be the dominant position but the danger of Canning and Mills and the other Aucklanders lurks like a crouching panther and nothing can be assumed.
