Jennings to face disciplinary committee Peter Robinson - 8 February 2001
Easterns coach Ray Jennings is to appear before a United Cricket Board disciplinary committee to face a charge of bringing the game into disrepute following allegations that he offered money to bowlers to inflict injury on Allan Donald by means of aggressive bowling. The charges follow an incident in the SuperSport Series Super 8 match between Easterns and Free State at Willowmoore Park last weekend during which Donald was felled after ducking into a short ball from Easterns fast bowler Andre Nel. Jennings appeared before a UCB inquiry on Thursday after which the charge was levelled against him. Easterns captain Deon Jordaan and Nel also attended the inquiry and, according to a UCB statement, the inquiry committee also spoke to "various individuals". Jennings has denied offering Nel R1 000 to hit Donald again and a report from the Easterns president, Cassim Suliman, suggested that the price tag bandied around by Easterns fielders when Donald resumed batting was a joke. Since Jennings took charge of Easterns at the beginning of last season, the Cinderella union has earned itself a reputation as one of the most competitive teams in South African cricket. The side has been likened to the Wimbledon of South African cricket – "You might not like us, but you have to respect us" – and few opposing teams enjoy playing at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. Nel is regarded as one of the brightest fast bowling prospects in the country and is an outsider for South Africa's tour of the West Indies next month. After he hit Donald, however, the 23-year-old burst into tears. No date has been set for the disciplinary hearing, but it is expected to take place in the near future.
