Dawn Moin for use of technology
9 February 2001

Pakistan will advocate for the use of more technology in the Test captains meeting scheduled for Melbourne, Australia, on Feb 12. Captain Moin Khan said from Lahore that he would also press for the clarification of bad light rule which was one of the factors that led to Pakistan's defeat against England in the third Test late last year.

"The bad light law needs to be clearly defined. If I had been in Nasser Hussain's place, I would also have liked to carry on but what about the fielders. The light at the centre is different to what it is in the outfield.

"In fact it is more dangerous in the outfield because the fielders can't pick the ball. And when the batsmen are batting in death overs, it can even risk careers of the players," said Moin, who leaves for Singapore with the Pakistan team on Saturday.

The third Test against England ended in near darkness with Moin's appeal for bad light turned down thrice by West Indies Steve Bucknor.

"It was Pakistan on the receiving end at that time. But tomorrow there can be some other team. Why leave any lacunas in the law," he said.

He suggested that the match should not be extended to more than 30 minutes on the final day as compared to the playing hours on the first four days.

He recalled that in the third Test, play was called off around 4.55pm on the first four days but on the final day it continued until 5.58pm.

The Pakistan skipper said he was against the use of technology for leg before decisions but supported the idea of using third umpire to judge bat and pad catches.

"I believe umpires are the best judges to give verdict in leg before cases because of the angle and the height. But as regards bat and pad catches, third umpire should be consulted."

He said it would not reduce the authority of the umpires in the centre but would help in making the sport less controversial.
