Lara hit for six by series award 10 February 2001
Melbourne: Brian Lara, controversially named Player Of The Series after Australia's 38-run win over the West Indies in the second final of the Carlton Series here yesterday, acknowledged that an Australian should have won the award. Amid deafening boos and chants of: 'Mark Waugh! Mark Waugh!' Lara apologised to the crowd for the award and the level of the cricket played by the West Indies. A release from the Australian Cricket Board yesterday said Lara polled 11 votes to Waugh's nine. In third place was Picky Ponting with eight. Lara's prize was an AUS$20 000 CBR900RR Honda Fireblade motorbike. 'First, I want to say I certainly agree with the crowd,' said a clearly embarrassed Lara. 'One of the Australians certainly deserved this award. They played tremendous cricket. To Steve Waugh, well done.' Lara finished fifth in the series averages, and although he made more runs than any other player, Mark Waugh averaged 92.25 to his 53.14. © The Barbados Nation
