Bajans share honours 10 February 2001
Charlestown, Nevis: Bowling his left-arm spin Ryan Hinds grabbed seven wickets as Barbados fought back after a promising start by the Leeward Islands on Day 1 of the sixth round Busta Cup matches at Grove Park, yesterday. Leeward Islands, electing to bat, were 234 for eight with Omari Banks not out on 16 and 'keeper Joel Simmonds on nine. Captain Stuart Williams (88) and Junie Mitchum (58) posted a punishing century opening stand but a late afternoon heroics of the 19-year-old Hinds, capturing seven for 66 off 25 overs, allowed Barbados to share the honours. Both Williams and Mitchum had several slices of luck while they established a new Leewards opening stand record against Barbados of 141, easily topping the previous mark of 86 Williams had with Lanville Harrigan at Kensington Oval in 1994. Williams was dropped on three by Dave Marshall at second slip, while Mitchum gave chances to Floyd Reifer in the gully on five and on 22 to Philo Wallace at mid-on before lunch. Williams hit 17 fours and faced 141 balls in a 204-minute stroke-filled stay at the crease. Captain Ian Bradshaw was in the picture taking the catch to dismiss Alex Adams for six off Hinds which reduced the Leewards to 161 for two at tea. Hinds, a former West Indies Under-19 skipper, completely dominated the post-tea period, bowling unchanged for all the Leewards wickets and remarkable figures of six for 30 off 19 overs in the session. His initial three-wicket burst staggered the Leewards from 176 for two to 184 for five. He first trapped Mitchum leg before wicket after the Kittitian had struck four fours in a half-century knock that came off 179 balls. Devon Williams (12) was next out, bowled going for an elaborate on-drive, and Colin Cannonier went caught by Sean Armstrong at slip driving outside the off-stump at a ball that drifted away. Carl Tuckett (18) was trapped LBW at 203 for six, and his dismissal triggered another slide for the home side which saw them lose three wickets for the addition of just seven runs. Wilden Cornwall was beaten by flight and gave a return catch to Hinds, and Kerry Jeremy, failing to cope with a faster ball, was bowled at 210 for eight.
Windwards 124-7 vs England 'A' At Mindoo Phililip Park, St. Lucia: The Windward Islands continued their dismal run with another inept batting display against England A on Day 1, yesterday. The Windwards, sent in to bat, were struggling at the end of the rain-shortened day, with Deighton Butler not out 18 and Orlanzo Jackson on 17. The pair has so far featured in an unbroken eighth-wicket partnership of 35 runs - the best of the innings so far - after the Windwards were in dire straits at 89 for seven. Left-arm seamer Ryan Sidebottom has been the Windwards' tormentor with four for 33 off 16 overs.
Trinidad and Tobago 143 & 66-2 vs West Indies B 154 At Roxborough Sporting Complex, Tobago, West Indies B, led by an undefeated knock of 49 by skipper Richie Richardson captured first innings points over Trinidad and Tobago on Day 2, yesterday. At the close, the Trinidadians, who conceded a slender lead of 11 runs led overall by 55 with eight second innings wickets standing. Former West Indies Test captain Richardson and fast bowler Ryan Griffith featured in a last-wicket partnership of 24 in 63 minutes to steal first innings lead from the local team. Richardson batted for 270 minutes, faced 201 balls and struck four fours in his knock after the youngsters resumed from 51 for five overnight.
Guyana 205-5 vs Jamaica At Albion, Guyana: Guyana, led by half-centuries from Travis Dowlin and captain Carl Hooper staged a recovery after a shaky start against Jamaica on Day 1, yesterday. At the close of an absorbing day Hooper was not out 62 and Lennox Cush unbeaten on ten. Dowlin, who made a solid 77 and Hooper shared a vital fifth-wicket stand of 97 in 135 minutes after Guyana were reeling on 74 for four just after lunch. Fast-medium bowler Darren Powell and experienced off-spinner Nehemiah Perry have been Jamaica's most successful bowlers with two wickets each for 26 and 42 runs, respectively. Dowlin's recent scores were 116 not out against West Indies B and 58 against Trinidad and Tobago. After his dismissal, Hooper, who started the match with 530 runs mixed aggression in a 200-minute knock off 167 balls.
