Kapil refuses to play in Tied Test re-union 19 February 2001
Former Indian captain Kapil Dev has refused to play in a limited-overs match between some of the greats of India and Australia in Chennai next month in aid of the the Gujarat earthquake victims. The match is a re-union for the cricketers who played in the tied Test in the city in September 1986. "I don't want to wear whites again. I have retired from the game. It is goodbye," the former world record holder with 434 Test wickets told PTI in New Delhi on Monday. Kapil, whose record was surpassed last year by Courtney Walsh of the West Indies, said the effort of the Cricket Boards of the two countries was laudable but "I have nothing to do with the game anymore". Though he said he had quit the game, Kapil Dev confessed his thoughts were still with the team of which he was coach till last year and said "I wish them all luck in the series against Australia". © PTI
