Kapil Dev, Wadekar to appear before Madhavan next week Former Indian captains Kapil Dev and Ajit Wadekar are to meet the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) anti corruption commissioner K Madhavan next week in New Delhi as a follow up to the CBI report on the match fixing scandal. Press Trust of India (PTI) reported on Friday that while Kapil Dev was to have met Madhavan at the Ferozeshah Kotla on Saturday morning, Wadekar had his appointment with the former CBI joint director on Monday. Now, Wadekar's appointment has been deferred to Monday while Kapil will meet him on Wednesday. Kapil Dev had received a clean chit from the CBI as it had found nothing substantial against him. Subsequently, neither he nor Wadekar were called for meetings with Madhavan. Following his report, five cricketers, Mohd. Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, Manoj Prabhakar, Nayan Mongia and Ajay Sharma, besides team physiotherapist Ali Irani were slapped with life bans and five-year suspensions. Soon after however, the BCCI decided to ask Madhavan to conduct "appropriate enquiries" with Kapil Dev and Wadekar and submit a supplementary report on the issue. Delhi Police to visit UK, SA to probe cricket scam New Delhi city Police Commissioner Ajai Raj Sharma said in the capital on Friday that the Delhi Police would depute a team to the United Kingdom and South Africa for a further probe into the match fixing scandal. Speaking to reporters, Sharma said "We have sought the government's permission for this. The feedback so far from these countries has been inadequate," and added that once the permission was given, a high-level police team would visit these countries by February-end. PTI reported that while answering questions on the issue, Sharma said that the official line from the UK and South Africa was that the charge-sheeted former South African captain Hansie Cronje had filed "a few petitions" and hence not much could be done as long as the matter was sub-judice. Mongia a contender for national selection, says Borde The chairman of the selection committee, Chandu Borde said in Vijayawada on Friday that wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia was a contender for selection for national team after his name had been cleared from the murky match-fixing scandal. Speaking to reporters during the Duleep Trophy match featuring North Zone and South Zone, Borde felt that Vijay Dahiya was young and showing up well but needed exposure and experience. He also said that the selection committee was looking for a quality spinner in view of the forthcoming Australian tour to India. This turned the attention to the injured leg spinner Anil Kumble who might have to miss the Australian tour in case of a surgery and Borde said "We wish Anil Kumble will be fit for the crucial Australian series." Show cause notices on Arjuna awards on Monday The cricketers banned by the BCCI in connection with the match fixing scandal Mohd. Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja and Manoj Prabhakar have been asked to appear before a Sports Ministry panel to show cause for the notices served on them regarding the withdrawal of the Arjuna Awards bestowed upon them. Quoting Ministry sources, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported on Friday that Jadeja has been asked to appear before a panel constituted for this purpose by Sports Minister Uma Bharti, on January 8. The report added that the next day (January 9) Azharuddin would show cause to the notice while Prabhakar would be the last to appear before the panel on January 10. The source said that thereafter the panel would examine the response of the banned players before taking a decision under Clause 17 of the Arjuna Award Rules. Prabhakar, Azharuddin and Jadeja were given Arjuna Awards in 1983, 1986 and 1997 respectively. © CricInfo
