6th January 2001, Dambulla. Work on the first phase of Dambulla's International Cricket Stadium is nearing completion. 80% of the Grand Stand, which is the main construction and grounds, both of which come under Phase I of the project have been completed. This includes ground preparation work comprising filling, motor grading, ground perimeters, and water drainage systems. The centre pitch is ready while the top coating needs to be completed. The nurseries are ready for planting and work on the open tiers are in progress.

The scoreboard is temporarily housed in a steel structure. Land, which has been identified for accommodating the car park, is now ready for surface finishing. Power clearance has already been obtained and transformers will be installed in early February. In addition to the progress of the groundwork, landscaping too is continuing at a steady rate of progress.

Once all work on Phase I is completed, the Grand Stand with its unique suspended ceiling will accommodate 1000 seated spectators. It will also feature 100 VIP seats in an air-conditioned area, together with air-conditioned cubicles seating 200 people, seating accommodation with A/C facilities for approximately 100 members of the press and media, commentary boxes for radio and television crews, player's area with viewing, dining and dressing rooms together with a banquet hall that can accommodate 100 people.

The Grand Stand will also feature two separate air-conditioned restaurants capable of seating 80 guests at a sitting. Out of four satellite kitchens, two will provide food for the players while the other two will cater to the needs of the restaurants.

In addition, the media will also benefit from a specially constructed camera deck giving photographers an ideal vantage of the field of play. Spectators in the grandstand will have the advantage of viewing the pitch and appreciating the spectacular scenery of Dambulla's hills, lake and Sigiriya Rock beyond the stadium's boundaries.

A fully equipped air-conditioned gym in the Grand Stand will also cater to players' fitness requirements.

With work on Phase I of the stadium continuing at the projected pace the Dambulla stadium will be ready to host its inaugural one-day match between England and Sri Lanka scheduled for March 2001.
