Notts sign England Under-19 seamer Notts CCC Media Release - 9 January 2001
Teenage seamer Nadeem Malik has been offered his first professional contract just days after jetting off on the England Under-19 tour to India. The two-year deal Malik has agreed at Trent Bridge tops off a highly eventful few days for the 18-year-old, who was drafted on to the England trip recently as a last minute replacement. Said Notts Assistant Cricket Manager Mick Newell: "Nadeem has really shown a great deal of promise in the last year or so, making rapid strides forward in our Second XI. "As a result of his progress he was named as first reserve for the 15-strong England Under-19 squad to tour India and following a last minute withdrawal has now taken his place on that trip. "Being a college student, he has found juggling his studies and his cricket career very difficult in the past but has now decided to make a firmer commitment to the game and has been rewarded with a full-time playing contract. "He still has work to do but as we have lost a lot of seamers at Trent Bridge since last season and Nadeem fitted the bill perfectly as we started looking to rebuild." A Nottingham-born youngster, Malik has been a member of the Notts Elite Squad, made up of the countyıs outstanding young cricketers, for the past two years. He also impressed in the Second XI last season taking 15 wickets in five Championship games at an average of 19.40. © CricInfo Ltd.
