Adam Gilchrist was leading Australia for the first time in absence of injured Steve Waugh. He became 15th player to captain Australia in a ODI. Gilchrist also became the second wicket keeper to captain Australia after Ian Healy who has captained Australia in eight matches.
Brian Lara, on 17, completed the 1000 runs in World Series Cup matches. He was playing his 30th match and 30th innings. Lara became seventh West Indian and 26th batsman to do so.
Ridley Jacobs, on 18, completed his 1000 runs in ODIs. He was playing his 65th match and 55th innings. Jacobs became the second West Indian after Jeff Dujon (1934 runs from 167 matches) and 13th wicketkeeper in all to do so. Jacobs also completed the allround double of 1000 runs and 100 dismissals.
The catch of Sherwin Campbell was 150th dismissal (131 catches & 19 stumpings) for Adam Gilchrist in his 96th match. He became second Australian after Ian Healy and seventh 'keeper to do so.
The wicket of Ricardo Powell was 100th for Shane Warne in the World Series Cup matches. This feat came in his 59th match. He became only second bowler after Craig McDermott (115 wickets in 78 matches) to do so.
Mark Waugh on reaching 23, surpassed Pakistan's Saeed Anwar's aggregate of 7638 runs to occupy the fifth place among the most prolific run-scorers in the shorter version of the game. Only Sachin Tendulkar (9899), Mohammad Azharuddin (9378),Desmond Haynes (8648) and Aravinda de Silva (8336) are ahead of Waugh's aggregate.
Mark Waugh scored his 15th hundred in his 223rd match-second against West Indies. He had made 102 at this same venue on 05-01-1997.
The win was Australia's first over West Indies on this ground in seven matches. West Indies was losing only its third match out of a total of 19 on this ground.
The 206 run-partnership between Gilchrist and Mark Waugh for the opening wicket surpassed many a records. It was the highest for the opening wicket in all WSC matches beating the 189 run-partnership between Mark Taylor and Mark Waugh against Sri Lanka at Perth on 12-01-1996. It was also a new record for Australia against West Indies obliterating the 135 run-partnership between Steve Smith and Graeme Wood at Melbourne on 10-02-1985.
It was the eighth century stand for the first wicket between Gilchrist and Mark Waugh which takes this pair past the Australian record of seven century stands of David Boon and Geoff Marsh. Only Greenidge-Haynes (15) and Ganguly-Tendulkar (12) exceed the tally of this Australian pair.
The Gilchrist-Waugh pair has now added 1946 runs in 40 floodlit matches, the maximum for the opening wicket in such matches. The pair went ahead of Indian pair of Ganguly and Tendulkar which has aggregated 1830 runs in 44 innings.
Adam Gilchrist (98) became a victim of nervous ninety for the second time in his career. He had made 92 against India at Adelaide on 26-01-2000. Gilchrist's innings is the third highest by a wicketkeeper in nineties after) Sri Lankan Romesh Kaluwitharana's 99 (v Zimbabwe also at Harare on 24-10-1999) and Zimbabwean Andy Flower's unbeaten 99 (v Australia at Harare on 18-12-1999).
Gilchrist, while narrowly missing the distinction of scoring a hundred on captaincy debut, became only the second player to make a score ninety plus on captaincy debut. Interestingly the only other player to make a score in ninety on captaincy debut was none other than his current skipper Steve Waugh who made 91 against South Africa at Bloemfontein on 13-04-1997. Had he made the hundred, Gilchrist would have become only the fifth player to score a century on captaincy debut after New Zealander Glenn Turner (171* v East Africa at Birmingham on 07-06-1975), West Indian Richie Richardson (106* v Pakistan at Sharjah on 17-10-1991), India's Sachin Tendulkar (110 v Sri Lanka at Colombo RP on 28-08-1996) and Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya (102 v Zimbabwe at Colombo SSC on 26-01-1998).
Australia has now won 11 consecutive World Series Cup matches which equals the best run by a team in WSC matches. Ironically it was West Indies which has won 11 matches at a trot from 1983-84 to 1984-85.
Mark Waugh was winning man of the match award for the 20th time in his career. He is now only one short of brother Steve's record tally for Australia.
The award was 11th for Mark Waugh in day-night matches which equals the tally of Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya. Now, only Sachin Tendulkar (17) has won more awards than Mark Waugh in day-night matches.
