ACB Waugh and Fleming in, Katich out of Australian one-day international squad
Australian Cricket Board - 22 January 2001

Victorian swing-bowler Damien Fleming has been recalled to the Australian one-day international squad along with Australian captain Steve Waugh, who has recovered from a groin strain.

Fleming's excellent form in the Australia A one-day matches in early January has won him selection in the senior squad. The right-armer took 3 for 18 off 10 overs against the West Indies in Adelaide on 9 January and 1 for 17 off five overs against Zimbabwe in Brisbane on 9 January.

Fleming's Mercantile Mutual Cup form has also been good. In his four games for the Bushrangers, Fleming has taken four wicket and at a very good economy rate of 3.36.

On his selection, Fleming said:

"I'm absolutely rapt to make it back to the senior Australian side. I've been working hard after a few early-season setbacks.

"I'm really pleased with how the ball has been coming out in the last two weeks and this has given me a lot of confidence. These Carlton Series games present a real chance for me to press for more regular Australian selection and I can't wait to join the squad in Adelaide for the match against West Indies.

"The team is playing so well at the moment and spots are rare so I'm just happy to be back."

The 76-game player broke his index finger while batting against fellow Victorian Simon Dart in a grade match for South Melbourne in November, and he incurred a neck injury in December.

Steve Waugh rejoins the squad after incurring a groin injury during practice two weeks ago. Waugh will resume the captaincy with stand in skipper Adam Gilchrist his deputy.

After making his debut against Zimbabwe at the MCG yesterday (21 January 2001), Western Australian left-hander Simon Katich has made way for Waugh.

The squad of 14 is:

The squad assembles in Adelaide on Wednesday ahead of its match against the West Indies at the Adelaide Oval on Australia Day (26 January 2001). This match is a sell-out.
