Rain saves Kenya
Radhika Moolraj - 26 January 2001

Heavy rains in Nairobi condemned the final three-day game of Sri Lanka A's tour of Kenya to a draw at Ruaraka Sports Club today. Only 44 overs of play were possible after Wednesday's heavy downpour prevented any play before lunch. Kenya were 90 for four at the close.

Sri Lanka opted to declare on their overnight score of 151 for five and thus started the day with a lead of 83 runs. The Kenyans started badly and at one stage it looked as if they might capitulate in similar fashion to the first innings.

Sri Lanka opted to open the bowling with left arm spinner, Niroshan Bandaratilake, who promptly reduced the home side to 29 for three. However, Thomas Odoyo and Kennedy Otieno rescued the innings with a 50 run partnership for the fourth wicket. Despite the damp pitch and slow outfield, both batsmen played freely and Otieno livened up proceedings with two lofted sixes over extra cover.

When Gallage finally dismissed Odoyo for 36 from 88 deliveries, Kenya were already safe and the match was called off soon after as the light started to fade. Kennedy Otieno remained unbeaten on 33 at the close.

The two sides will now play consecutive one-day matches on Friday and Saturday. Sri Lanka will depart on Sunday.
