Bloomfield slip up against BRC
Charlie Austin - 28 January 2001

Bloomfield Sports and Athletic Club lost to Burgher Recreation Club by an innings and 10 runs at Reid Avenue today. The unexpected defeat means that Bloomfield lose their top of the table position. They now slip down to third position. BRC remain second and Colts CC take the top stop after their nine-wicket against Sri Lanka Air Force.

Bloomfield struggled throughout the match despite the return of their star batsman, Tillakaratne Dilshan. They were bowled out for 108 in their first innings and then for 112 in the second innings. The Bloomfield batsmen looked to be making a better fist of it the second time around and at one stage they were 60 for one. However, after the fall of Sanjaya Rodrigo, the middle order crumbled. The last five wickets fell for just 12 runs, as slow left arm spinner, Sajeeva Weerakoon, took five wickets for 17.

Group B leaders, Nondescripts Cricket Club, retain their top of the table position as they settled for a first innings victory against Moors Sports Club at Maitland Place. When Moors Sports Club narrowly avoided the follow on, NCC opted to bat out the day. Pradeep Hewage and RR Tissera added 116 for the first wicket. Hewage went on to score 94 from 167 balls. Ranagana Herath was once again the pick of the bowlers and took four wickets for 39 as NCC finished the day on 205 for five.

Sinhalese Sports Club were also satisfied with a first innings victory against Singha CC and opted for some extended batting practice on the final day. Sanjeeva Ranatunga helped himself to 131 from 213 balls as SSC finished the day on 353 for five. They remain in second position in Group B.

Colombo Cricket Club tried to secure an outright victory against Galle CC and very nearly succeeded at Maitland Crescent. Having bowled out Galle CC for 134 in their first innings they added 113 quick runs in the morning before declaring. Wicket keeper batsman, Polonnowita, helped himself to 36 from just 14 deliveries. The Colombo cricket Club spinners, Rupasinghe and Mudalige, then took three wickets apiece as Galle struggled to save the match. In the end they finished on 150 for eight.

Elsewhere there were easy nine wicket victories for both Colts Cricket Club and Tamil Union in their respective matches against Sri Lanka Air Force and Sri Lanka Navy. The Antonian-Panadura and Matara-Police games were both drawn.
