3rd Test, South Africa v Sri Lanka, Statistical Highlights
Rajneesh Gupta - 29 January 2001
It was the 1529th Test in cricket history.
It was South Africa's 251st and Sri Lanka's 108th Test match.
It was the 11th match between these two sides. The record now reads: South Africa 6, Sri Lanka 1, drawn 4.
It was the fifth match between these two sides on South African soil. The record now reads: South Africa 4, drawn one.
It was the 142nd match on South African soil.
Umpies Rudi Koertzen and Peter Willey officiated in their 22nd and 21st Test respectively .
Justin Kemp (right handed batsman and right arm medium fast bowler from Queenstown) made his Test debut. He became the 279th player to represent South Africa in Test cricket.
Marvan Atapattu played his 35th consecutive Test which equalled Aravinda de Silva's Sri Lankan record of most consecutive appearances. De Silva had played his 35 consecutive matches in between 1987-88 and 1994-95.
Aravinda de Silva played his 46th Test on foreign soil which makes him the most capped Sri Lankan player away from home. He was previously at level with 45 matches with Arjuna Ranatunga.
Neil McKenzie (103) made his second hundred in his ninth Test. His only other hundred was 120 against New Zealand at Port Elizabeth in December 2000.
Shaun Pollock scored his maiden hundred in his 51st Test. His previous highest was 92 also against Sri Lanka at Cape Town in 1997-98.
Pollock took only 35 balls to reach his fifty which is the second fastest fifty by a South African on record. Hansie Cronje had taken 31 balls to complete his fifty against Sri Lanka in Centurion Test in 1997-98.
Pollock raced to his hundred off 95 balls. He now shares the distinction of scoring the fastest 'recorded' hundred for South Africa alongwith Jonty Rhodes who also reached the three figure mark off 95 balls against West Indies at the same venue in 1998-99 while scoring unbeaten 103. Denis Lindsay might have taken lesser balls than Rhodes and Pollock to complete his hundred during his innings of 131 against Australia at Johannesburg in 1966-67, but exact details of his innings are not available.
Pollock's innings (111) is the highest by a number nine batsman for South Africa and sixth highest in all Tests. The previous highest for South Africa was unbeaten 102 by Lance Klusener against India at Cape Town in 1996-97.

Pollock's innings is also the highest by a Test captain at number nine beating the 73 (unbeaten) by West Indian Frank Worrell against India at Port-of-Spain in 1961-62 and 73 by Australian Ian Johnson against India at Chennai in 1956-57.
Pollock, on 50, completed 1000 runs in 'home' matches. He became the 19th South African batsman to do so. Incidentally Pollock is the slowest in reaching this landmark taking 32 matches to do so. Johnny Waite and Andrew Hudson with 21 Tests were the previous joint record holders.
Pollock's maiden hundred came in his 51st Test. He now holds the record of playing most Tests before maiden hundred. The previous record was held by Australian Ian Healy who reached three figure mark for the first time in his 48th Test.
The 150 run-partnership between Neil McKenzie and Shaun Pollock was South Africa's best for eighth wicket against all countries. This obliterated the previous highest of 148 between Mark Boucher and Shaun Pollock against Zimbabwe at Harare in 1999-00.
This was also the highest partnership for eighth wicket by any country against Sri Lanka beating the 107 run-partnership between Ricky Ponting and Jason Gillespie for Australia at Kandy in 1999-00.
The partnership was also the best for South Africa against Sri Lanka for any wicket. The previous highest was the 137 run-partnership between Andrew Hudson and Kepler Wessels for the first wicket at Kandy in 1993-94.
Fernando's economy rate (111.46) is the tenth worst by a bowler bowling atleast 60 balls in an innings. Remarkably the worst ever economy rate with this yardstick was achieved by South Africa's Allan Donald in the second innings of Oval Test against England in 1994 as he was hammered for 96 runs in 12 overs (economy rate 133.33).

Romesh Kaluwitharana's five catches in South Africa's only innings set a new record for Sri Lanka against South Africa. The previous record of most dismissals by a Sri Lankan keeper in an innings against South Africa was of four dismissals made on two occasions - by Pubudu Dassanayake in the first innings of Colombo (SSC) Test in 1993-94 and by Kaluwitharana himself in the second innings of Cape Town Test in 1997-98.
Sangakkara (98) became the 14th Sri Lankan to become a victim of nervous ninety in Test cricket. He also provided the 21st such instance for Sri Lanka.
Sanath Jayasuriya, when reached 14 in second innings, surpassed Duleep Mendis' run-aggregate of 898 runs as Sri Lanka's captain. Now only Arjuna Ranatunga with 3118 runs from 56 matches is ahead of Jayasuriya.
The win was South Africa's 75th - 14th by innings margin. Interestingly out of South Africa's last 11 wins seven have been by innings margin.
South Africa has now played 69 Test series - won 28, lost 30 and drawn 11. South Africa's performance at home reads as: played 37, won 17, lost 15 and drawn 5.
The defeat was Sri Lanka's 44th - 21st by innings margin. Three of them have come against South Africa.
Sri Lanka has now played 50 Test series - won 12, lost 25 and drawn 13. Sri Lanka's performance on foreign soil reads as: played 28, won 5, lost 17 and drawn 6.
