New SEPL batting record for Aussie Clemow Mike Vimpany - 1 July 2001
Australian Brian Clemow smashed 213 not out - the highest-ever individual score in Southern League cricket - as Lymington ran up a massive 335-2 against Premier Division 2 rivals Cove at the Sports Ground. The hard-hitting Sydney Grade batsman completely dismantled the Cove attack, cracking seven sixes and 29 fours in an innings of awesome power, which set up Lymington's 102-run victory. He later won £100 first prize in Lymington's monthly 100 Club draw ! Clemow is the third batsman to score a SL double-century - his 213 bettering previous best knocks of 205 by Mel Hussain for Hythe & Dibden (1984) and Hampshire's Robin Smith, who hit exactly 200 for Trojans at Petersfield in 1982. Incredibly, it wasn't the Manley star's highest-ever score. "I made 287 not out as an up and coming 16-year old in New South Wales," he recalled. The Australian thumped the Cove bowling to all parts of the Sports Ground, striking three powerful straight sixes and four more over square-leg and mid-wicket. Glyn Treagus (24), Daniel Peacock (46) and Ben Craft (31 not out) joined in the scoring spree as Lymington reached their highest ever total - and third biggest on record in the Southern League. Cove, who fielded a depleted side due to former captain Ian Crompton's 'stag' weekend, replied with 233-8, Hampshire Under-19 batsman Neil Randall (71) top scoring. Despite their run glut, Lymington were uanble to make up any ground on undefeated leaders Portsmouth, who trimmed Hambledon by eight wickets at St Helen's. Simon James (87) and Simon Barnard (62) led Hambledon to 210-7 (Ben Nolan 3-43), but Portsmouth hit back, with Stephen Cook (99 not out) and Matt Keech (92) sharing a match-winning 170-run stand. John Barnard, 37, cracked his first competitive century - after over 20 years of trying - as Old Tauntonians & Romsey ran up 294-6 in the 88-run win against Old Basing. Barnard made 106 not out and got support from Charles Forward (39) and Nick Stobert (54) as OTs put the game out of reach. Basement boys Old Basing made 206-6 (Thane 61) in reply. Steve Green (5-17) and Andy Birch (3-27) ripped the heart out of Sparsholt, who plunged from 73-1 (Bill Gunyon 33) to 119 all out at Cockets Mead. Sparsholt's Carl Nichols struck two early blows, but an unbroken stand between Kevin Neave (53) and Shaun Green (39) took Easton to victory. A four-wicket spell by Damian Carson (4-32) removed the top-order and left inconsistent Trojans facing defeat against United Services at Stoneham Lane. Tim Subnaik (32) and Mike Durand (28) partially dug Trojans out of trouble, but South African John Geoghegan (3-13) struck to leave the Stoneham club 128 all out. Mark Toogood (46) held US together when Subnaik (3-49) hit back, before Gary Braithwaite (26) and Andy Ainsley ensured the visitors a three-wicket victory. © Mike Vimpany
