Taylor keeps B.A.T. in SEPL Division One title hunt
Mike Vimpany - 9 July 2001

Richard Taylor produced a stunning all-round performance to guide BAT Sports to a 47-run win at Bashley (Rydal) and keep the Tobaccomen in the thick of the Southern Electric ECB Premier League leadership race.

The former Old Tauntonians & Romsey player hit 64 - 58 of them in boundaries ! - and then took 5-42 as BAT won their fourth 'time' match in five weeks.

But Havant, the defending champions, thrashed relegation threatened Hungerford by 194 runs.

There were also Division 1 victories for Bournemouth, by nine wickets at Liphook & Ripsley, and Calmore Sports, who trimmed South Wilts by 86 runs.

Burridge piled up a massive 301-5 against Andover, whose reply ended at 94-3 - the umpires taking the players off because of danger from lightning.

Taylor's heroics at Bashley began with BAT up against it at 94-5, with Damien Shirazi (45) the only batsman to nullify the new ball threat of John Whiting (2-36) and Matt King (2-59).

But one six and 13 fours later Taylor had transformed the game.

Hitting the ball hard and straight and through the on-side, Taylor needed to run only six of his 64.

He took BAT's total to 183 - and then hit Bashley with the ball.

Bashley's top order fell apart around Neil Thurgood (59) - Taylor (5-42) and Dan Goldstraw (3-47) reducing the New Forest club to 82-5 before some late resistance from Shaun Lilley (19) and King (17) took the reply to 136 all out.

Havant's batsmen enjoyed a 275-run romp before skittling Premier 1 strugglers Hungerford for 81 at the War Memorial ground.

Dominic Carson (71) shared century partnerships of 117 with Andy Perry (47) and Richard Hindley (72 not out) before young Australian Shawn Gillies cracked an unbeaten 73.

Hungerford, in some disarray, were ripped out for 81 - Gillies (3-14), Richard Lewis (3-16) and Phil Loat (3-13) doing the damage.

Playing against his former Calmore Sports team-mates, South Wilts seamer Chris Steedon (3-51) shot out Paul Draper, Tom Pegler and Paul Cass in quick succession.

But Calmore's middle-order dug in, with Jez Goode (34) and James Hibberd (24) initiating a mid-innings recovery.

Two wickets each by Rob Wade and James Tomlinson dumped Calmore in further strife at 120-8, but lanky Australian Glen Motchall (44) and Mark Boston (31) produced a ninth-wicket stand of 59 to take the visitors to 180 (Tom Caines 3-35).

Any prospects South Wilts had were effectively blown away early on, with Motchall (4-29) removing Wade and Jamie Glasson, and Hibberd (2-20) trapping Russell Rowe leg before for a duck.

South Wilts sank to 39-6, with only Brendan Pauwells (29) and latterly Steedon (20) putting up any resistance against Paul Draper (3-16) as the Salisbury club crumbled to 94 all out.

Joe Wilson took five wickets for three runs in 10.5 overs and Matt Swarbrick smashed 68 not out as Bournemouth routed Liphook & Ripsley by nine wickets.

Liphook tumbled from 71-1 (Steve Riley 35) to 99 all out before Swarbrick hit 50 off 29 balls to ensure Bournemouth beat both the weather and their hosts. Stuart Rintoul scored 29.

Paul Hawkins, inventor of Channel 4's Hawkeye ball-tracking innovation, cracked 121 and added 132 with Dave Jackson (81 not out) as Burridge piled up 301-5 against Andover at Botley Road.

Andover were 94-3 (Mark Miller 49) when the umpires abandoned play due to lightning overhead.
