Mexico: Ex-Test batsman hits Mexico for six July 13, 2001
Representative games The season concluded in mid-June with two games against the touring Miami Masters. With ex-West Indian Test and one-day batsman Faoud Bacchus in the Miami line-up, MCCC's work was always going to be difficult. The second XI stumbled on the Saturday but the first XI put up a good show in reply to a batting exhibition from Bacchus. The right-hander caressed, cut, pulled and drove his way to a magnificent 130 not out. MCCC had to make 253 to win and started well before falling away in the middle overs. A disappointing result was averted when all-rounder Hugo van Belle smashed 6 sixes on his way to a career-best 94. Miami Masters, however, were deserving winners by 41 runs. A very successful celebration of the antipodean holiday, Anzac Day, took place in April. Just on 200 spectators were treated to DJ's, an authentic Aussie BBQ as well as some thrilling cricket. An Australian and New Zealand XI battled a Rest of the World line-up in a tight, pulsating match. Rest of the World struggled to 144 from 30 overs but soon had the Anzac's in strife. With one over left, and two wickets in hand, the Anzacs required 12 to win. Remarkably, 11 were struck, leaving the game tied. Domestic competition wrap-up The domestic competition ebbed and flowed with Corinthians starting very strongly before Reforma and Aztecs pegged them back with some gutsy cricket after Christmas. Max Cawdron, captain of Reforma, has batted particularly well, with a few notable innings. His 77 against Houston was a gem. He in fact topped the batting averages with 485 runs at 60.63 per innings. Max also led Reforma to the domestic championship. South African Carl Greyling has been a model of consistency. Typically difficult to dismiss, he has been savage on any loose bowling. He scored 341 runs @ 48.71. MCCC coach Elliot Cartledge began slowly but found his groove after Christmas. He enjoyed particular success in the domestic competition, scoring 434 runs @ 48.22 and claimed 27 wickets @ 12.67. He skippered Aztecs to four successive losses before Christmas and then four successive wins thereafter. Brisbane-born Dean Ilott ably led Corinthians this season. His all-round efforts greatly assisted his side (nearly 250 runs with the bat and 10 wickets bowling his medium-pace outswing). The phlegmatic Charlie Carr led the bowling averages with 13 wickets at the miserly average of 9.31. His left-arm pace and late swing troubled all of the club's members as well as touring sides. Veteran Deb Choudhuri deserves recognition for an excellent all-round season. He compiled his first-ever half century in February and finished with over 200 runs in addition to 19 wickets @ 16.95. © 2001 CricInfo Ltd |
