Zoysa ruled out of Coca Cola Cup with ankle injury
Charlie Austin - 16 July 2001
Chairman of the Sri Lankan selectors, Tikiri Kehelgamuwa, confirmed today that
Nuwan Zoysa has been forced to withdraw from the 15-man Sri Lankan one-day
squad this morning after failing to recover from an ankle stress fracture.
According to Kehelgamuwa Zoysa, will be out of action for the next two months
and will therefore miss the three-match Test series with India that follows
the Coca Cola Cup.
He is replaced by right arm fast bowler Dinusha Fernando who played in the
recent Pakistan A series and first made a name for himself by clean bowling
Michael Atherton on three occasions during England's recent tour of Sri
Lanka.
The uncapped Fernando will be vying for the vacant opening bowler slot with
Dulip Liyanage. Chaminda Vaas will take the new ball and is certain to play.
Dilhara Fernando and Suresh Perera are considered better bowlers with the
old ball and may only play if Sri Lanka plays three fast bowlers, which is
likely against India.
Kehelgamuwa, however, has still not ruled out last minute changes to the
15-man squad. A final decision has to be made on Wednesday morning.
