Nayan Mongia is still – by some distance – India's most accomplished wicketkeeper. But murmurs of his involvement in the match-fixing scandal, and a strained relationship with the powers-that-be have resulted in exile from the international arena. Mongia first toured with India in 1990, as understudy to Kiran More. After a lengthy apprenticeship, with Baroda and the national side, he took the gloves when More called it a day in 1993-94. For almost six seasons, Mongia kept with distinction – and also scored a matchwinning hundred against Australia in 1996 – before losing his place in 1999. His involvement in a notorious one-day partnership with Manoj Prabhakar in 1994-95 was the first of several black marks against his name, and after a fallout with Sourav Ganguly in Chennai, the chances of the prodigal returning look slim.
