Havant one step away from prestigious ECB knock-out stages Mike Vimpany - 11 June 2001
Havant will face Farnham Royal, from the Thames Valley League, in the ECB Club Championship regional final on July 1. The Southern Electric Premier League champions defeated Winchester KS by 41 runs after Richard Lewis (38), Paul Gover (24) and Dominic Carson (22) had posted a challenging 206-9 (Ali Walker 3-26). Winchester were never in a position to seriously threaten Havant's position, although Stuart Marks (36) and the injured Simon Straker (26) put bat to ball. A five-wicket spell by Phil Loat (5-35) and a brace of victims for Stephen Foulger and Mark Copping bowled WKS out for 165. Farnham Royal, from Slough, beat Basingstoke & North Hants after losing fewer wickets in a high-scoring tied zone semi-final at May's Bounty. Teenager Russell Droy and Ray Pavesi hit half-centuries in Basingstoke's 237-8, but the Buckinghamshire side squeezed in after replying with 237-7. © SEPL
