Queenstown is looming as the latest newcomer to the ranks of towns in New Zealand with first-class cricket grounds.

Otago Cricket Association chief executive Graeme Elliott is confident that when this summer's domestic schedule is announced Queenstown will be on the list for a one-day game.

He's pencilled in January 2, the height of holiday time in the resort centre, as the venue for one of Otago's five home games in the domestic one-day series.

The venue for the match will be the high-quality Events Centre at Frankton, near Queenstown Airport.

Carisbrook groundsman Mark Perram will be involved in ensuring pitch preparations at the ground are up to standard.

The ground development has been brain child of Queenstown cricket stalwart Joe O'Connell and it has a pitch of Kakanui loam, with practice pitches of the same material.

Elliott said it is his hope that Queenstown might become a regular stopping off point for incoming international teams touring New Zealand as they seek to acclimatise to local conditions.

Central Otago's consistent summer weather would make it an ideal venue.

Otago will still continue to use Alexandra's Molyneux Park for one-day games as well.

"The ground at Queenstown is bigger than Molyneux Park and there were 8000 there for a pre-season Highlanders rugby game this year and while cricket crowds tend to take up more room, the ground would comfortably take 5000 or more.

"They have wonderful facilities there and they are quite unique.

"The people in Queenstown are keen to develop the use of the facility further and we are happy to work with them.

"I'm confident we will have a one-day game there when the programme is released and I'm equally confident the surface will be right," he said.
