Burly, big-hearted Tom Veivers rendered Australia yeoman service on the 1964 Ashes tour, bowling more overs than anyone bar Graham McKenzie, and finishing fourth in the Test batting averages. He was a purveyor of tidy offbreaks, wheeling uncomplainingly through an Ashes-record 95.1 overs in England's long innings in the fourth Test at Old Trafford. He was also a spunky left-handed striker, whose preparatory regime was miming strokes in the dressing-room while repeating the mantra: "And that, gentlemen, is four." Veivers was never, however, a slow bowler likely to win matches, and he faded from view after a disappointing tour of South Africa in 1966-67. Gideon Haigh
