Wayne Phillips
Wisden CricInfo staff - June 26, 2001
Wisden overview A tall, slim and debonair left-hander, Wayne Phillips had a short but spectacular Test career, making 159 on debut against Pakistan at Perth and 120 in an astonishing feat of counter-attacking against West Indies in Barbados on the otherwise barren 1983-84 tour. Despite an unorthodox wide grip, Phillips was a natural and clean hitter, especially when cutting and pulling, but his career began to decline after he was made to double as a wicketkeeper as Australia floundered post-Marsh. He continued to play for another half-dozen seasons for South Australia, and is now a permanent coach at the cricket academy in Adelaide, as well as an occasional commentator. Greg Baum
