An Auckland club medium-pacer who decided to experiment with wrist spin, Walker is now bidding for a regular place as a Test legspin bowler. Although short of stature and with normal-length fingers, Walker gives the ball a reasonable tweak, he has a useful wrong'un, and is sufficiently accurate for use in one-day matches. So far, however, the results have not quite matched the promise. Walker had three Tests in South Africa and one against Zimbabwe in 2000-01, and may well struggle for selection in the future while Daniel Vettori is the senior spinner in a side that generally does not favour playing two slow bowlers.
