1996:Under pressure after the loss of the Frank Worrell Trophy to Australia in the West Indies in 1995 and defeat by Kenya in the World Cup in India and Pakistan, Richie Richardson resigns during the World Cup tournament. He is replaced by Courtney Walsh who had filled in for him when he was absent with acute fatigue syndrome. West Indies defeat New Zealand 1-0 in two Tests in the Caribbean and 3-2 in the One-Day Internationals.

1998: Amidst public controversy, Courtney Walsh is replaced by Brian Lara after the tour of Pakistan in 1997 when all three Tests and all four One-Day Internationals were lost. Lara leads the West Indies to a 3-1 triumph in the Tests and 4-1 in the One-Day Internationals over England.

1999: Lara is placed on probation as captain for two Tests for the home series against Australia after losing 5-0 in the Tests and 6-1 in the One-Day Internationals in South Africa. He responds with match- winning scores of 213 and 153 not out in the second and third Tests as the West Indies share the series 2-2.

2000: Lara resigns as captain following what he terms "two years of moderate success and devastating failure" and takes a break from the game. Jimmy Adams is appointed new captain, along with new manager Ricky Skerritt and coach Roger Harper, and leads the team to victories in the Test series against Zimbabwe and Pakistan.

2001: Almost two years after he retired from international cricket Carl Hooper is nominated as captain by the selectors. If ratified, he would take over from Adams following heavy defeats in the Tests and One-Day series on tours of England and Australia.
