Early wickets as South Africa open their tour to the West Indies
MWP - 4 March 2001

Tight, disciplined bowling from the Busta XI during the first morning of the three day match against South Africa at the Everest Cricket Club in Georgetown restricted the tourists to just 70 runs in 31 overs while both openers were dismissed to complete a less than happy start for South Africa.

Test star Merv Dillon owed his economy rate (6-2-9-0) to a tendency to bowl three balls an over that bounced over the batsman's head but he worked up a decent head of steam and may have impressed the West Indies selectors ahead of the first Test which starts at the Bourda on March 9.

Ricky Christopher was less impressive but Kerry Jeremy's skiddy pace proved awkward on a pitch showing unexpected bounce, if not outright pace.

Herschelle Gibbs began to pick the pace up for the South Africans after the first hour but after lashing left arm spinner Sulieman Benn for a one-bounce four over long off he lashed the same bowler to backward point to depart for 36 from 72 balls. He struck five fours.

Gary Kirsten also perished to an aggressive stroke, driving Jeremy on the up to extra cover on 21. He faced 71 balls and struck two boundaries.

At lunch Jacques Kallis was seven not out with Daryll Cullinan on three.
