Papua New Guinea: Mobil Steamies and United face off in Port Moresby Grand Final
8 March 2001
The 2000/2001 Port Moresby Cricket A Grade Competition will reach its climax this weekend with perennial finalists Mobil Steamies and underdogs United locking horns in the Grand Final.
Fresh from a surprise victory last weekend over reigning premiers Hoods, United will look to continue their strong finals run by disposing of last seasons runners up who have had a quiet finals series.
Steamies will go into the match as favourites and will be led by veteran Captain Tau Ao and former national skipper Aukamu Noka. Together they will lead a side continuing a mixture of experience and youth.
The Steamies batting will be led by Noka, Peter Moide and youngster Mahuta Kivung who has had a promising season. Captain Ao who guided his side to victory in the Major Semi final with a match winning half century should again provide good support for his top order.
Their bowling attack which is by far the most balanced in the competition will be led by leading wicket takers paceman Gimapau Keimelo and Leg Spinner Ross Vagi. Keimelo and Vagi recently returned from the Pacifica Cup in New Zealand where they performed well Vagi in particular impressing making the Pacifica XI alongside Kempa Captain John Ovia. Together with Noel Kariko, Tao Ao and spinners Moide and Kivung Mobil attack looks to have the edge over United.
United will be led by PNG allrounder Rarua Dikana who was a consistent contributor in Auckland. Dikana will be expected to shoulder the batting responsibilities together with Vai Kevau and the Dai brothers Kohu and Mahuru.
On the bowling front in form swing bowler Sere Ao will lead from the front. Ao has been in devastating form having recently destroyed a star studded Hoods batting line up. With medium pacers Mea Udu, Kohu Dai and Dikana supporting him and backed up by spinner Mea Toua United will hope that they can continue their good bowling performances.
