Hong Kong win Tuanku Ja'Afar Trophy
Tony Munro - 12 March 2001
Hong Kong has won a rain-ravaged Tuanku Ja'Afar Trophy tournament in Bangkok, Thailand, on superior run-rate.
The abandonment of four of the scheduled seven matches due to unseasonal rains, meant Hong Kong was awarded the symbol of supremacy for South East Asian cricket despite playing only one match.
Hong Kong did enough on the first day against Singapore, amassing 320-8 from its allotted 50 overs, before dismissing the Singaporeans for 130 in 36 overs.
Captain, Stewart Brew, capitalised on a dropped catch before he had scored to lead the Hong Kong assault with 86. He was aided by major contributions from youngsters Duutish Chaudhary (85) and Munir Hussein (83 not out)
Hussein smashed his runs from just 50 balls.
Top scorers for Singapore were Zeng Reng Chen (45 not out) and skipper,
Johann Pieris (33). Medium pacer, Sher Lama (2-5 from 4 overs), off-spinner,
Jawaid Iqbal, (2-9 from 7 overs) and Hussein (2-11 from 4) were extremely economical for Hong Kong.
In the other opening day match, defending champions, Malaysia, defeated the host nation, Thailand, in its first match back in the tournament after a two-year absence, by 70 runs.
Opening batsman, Rakesh Madhavan (75), Steven Bell (74) and Yazid Imran (31) took advantage of some lax bowling and fielding from Thailand to post 316 in their allotted 50 overs.
The Thais made a spirited reply, with Kashif Ansari's 66 and Andrew's 50 the foundation of a total of 246-7 (50 overs).
Seventeen-year-old opening bowler, S.Vickneswaran (2-27) and off-spinner,
Mathew William (2-23), were the pick of the Malaysian attack.
In the only other game to be played, Singapore defeated Thailand by 48 runs, reduced to 30-overs-per-side.
The most notable feature of the match was the decision of the Thai captain to appeal against bad light and close the innings with two overs remaining.
The Singaporean innings began in dramatic fashion when captain, Johann
Pieris, smashed the first and last two balls of the initial over for sixes.
Pieris went on to make 63, supported by Brisbane-based Joshua Dearing (70), and Zubin Schroff (54), as Singapore compiled 259-6.
In reply, Thailand made 211-9 from 28 overs, before appealing for bad light.
The tournament was Hong Kong's final hit-out before travelling to Toronto, Canada in June for the ICC Trophy.
Malaysia hope to finish its preparations by hosting Pakistan 'A' next month.
Singapore, who face continual problems getting a full strength team on the field due to work and study commitments, included six teenagers in its squad for this tournament.
