Sri Lankan stars line up for Notts' Weekend of Legends Media Release - 14 March 2001
Four of the Sri Lankan team currently playing in the hugely competitive Test series against England are the latest top stars to confirm they will be at Trent Bridge on June 30 for the Sobers v Hadlee match as the main feature of the Weekend of Legends. Notts Chief Executive David Collier jetted out to the tropical island at the weekend to secure the services of Sanath Jayasuria, Aravinda de Silva, Chaminda Vaas and Marvan Atapattu for the game. The quartet join an impressive list of 17 other current world-class players who will take part in the first game of the weekend in teams managed by the two legendary former Nottinghamshire Knights Sir Richard Hadlee and Sir Garfield Sobers. Said Special Project Manager Barbara Quinn: "Attapattu, de Silva and Jayasuria are all proven world-class batsmen, while Vaas has demonstrated in the recent Galle and Kandy Tests that he is an excellent opening bowler. We are delighted to have attracted so many top international players for the match." Players already confirmed for the game on June 30 include: Shaun Pollock, Shoaib Akhtar, Gary Kirsten, Allan Donald, Phil Simmons, Saeed Anwar, Lance Klusener, Abdur Razzaq and Jonty Rhodes. The match will be followed on Sunday July 1 by a clash of past stars from England and Australia captained by former Test captains Graham Gooch and Allan Border. Though the England team is still to be confirmed, Border, the leading Test run-scorer of all time, will skipper a strong team including Merv Hughes, Mark Taylor, Ian Healy and David Boon. Adult tickets for the Weekend of Legends start at just £10 and are available from the Trent Bridge Ticket Office on 0870 168 8888.
