Hussain to return home - Flintoff a doubt
Charlie Austin - 17 March 2001

The England Captain Nasser Hussain will miss the forthcoming One-Day series against Sri Lanka after straining his right thigh in the Third Test Match in Colombo.

Hussain will fly home on Tuesday with four other members of England's Test squad; Michael Atherton, Jason Brown, Paul Nixon and Matthew Hoggard. A decision on who takes over the England captaincy for the One-Day series against Sri Lanka will be made at the end of this Test Match.

Nasser Hussain said: "It's a big disappointment to miss out on the One-Day series, but now priority now is to get my body right for challenges that lie ahead this summer against Australia and Pakistan."

Andrew Flintoff has been given until Monday to prove his fitness after arriving on the tour with an injury to his left ankle. Flintoff strained ligaments whilst playing soccer as part of pre-season training with Lancashire three weeks ago.

England head coach, Duncan Fletcher, said: "We are very disappointed that nobody informed the England team management of Andrew's injury especially as it is now three weeks old. Our physiotherapist, Dean Conway, was only informed of the injury by Andrew the day after he arrived in Colombo.

"Andrew underwent an X-ray yesterday and will continue to receive treatment over the next 24 hours. But if fails to improve than we will have no choice but to send him home as he is currently experiencing discomfort when batting and was unable to complete a 'Bleep' test with other members of the One-Day squad earlier today. The selectors are currently discussing a possible replacement for Andrew but no decision will be made until the end of the Test Match."
