Waugh is the best, says Ganguly Staff Reporter - 3 May 2001
It may seem a bit strange, especially after the verbal duels that both have had. However, the best captain that Sourav Ganguly has seen so far is none other than Australia's Steve Waugh. The Indian captain made this confession on Wednesday evening while inaugurating a road that had been named after him in Rajarhat in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Ganguly unveiled a plaque containing the new name of the road - Sourav Ganguly Avenue - at a function organised by the Rajarhat Gopalpur Municipality. There were thousands to see the inaugural ceremony. They wanted a question & answer session with Ganguly which the latter gracefully agreed to. It was during the course of this session that he mentioned the name of Steve Waugh as the best captain he had come across. When asked to name his favourite cricketer, Ganguly replied, "Sachin Tendulkar. It is a great pleasure batting with him." The answer was greeted with thunderous applause. However, when asked to name the all time best batsman, Ganguly like many others before him mentioned the name of Sir Donald Bradman. However, he was also quick to point out that his idol was David Gower. "Gower's artistic exploits with the bat turned me into his fan." The question that really made him think was `Who is the best all rounder in the world". Ganguly thought a lot before replying, "Sir Gary Sobers. I have not seen him play. But from what I have heard and read he is definitely the best all-rounder that the game of cricket has seen." He also added that Wasim Akram was the best bowler that he has faced so far. When asked what the secret of his success was against Pakistan, Ganguly said, "There is no secret behind the success against Pakistan. I always want to perform. The opposition does not matter." Ganguly also fluently handled his inaugural address. "I am really very happy at the way I have been honoured by naming a road after me. I will try to satisfy everybody with my performance and play as long as I can for India" he said. © CricInfo
