ICC Anti-Corruption Report to Lord Griffiths
ICC Media Release - 4 May 2001
The first major report from the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) has been completed and passed to the chairman of the ICC Code of Conduct Commission for consideration and assessment.
Once this has been completed the Commission will report its views to the ICC President.
The interim report is a comprehensive summary of the ACU's first six months of active investigation into corruption in international cricket. During the period covered by the report ACU investigators have visited Australia, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Sharjah and Sri Lanka to pursue their inquiries. In addition, they have supported formal corruption investigations mounted in England, Pakistan and West Indies.
While details of the report will remain confidential at this stage, it is likely to cover the origins of corruption in the world game and how it took hold. The extent and current status of the problem and a series of recommendations to safeguard players and the game in future are also expected to be included.
As an interim report it will not provide a final view on allegations levelled against cricketers named in various inquiries, such as the Indian CBI investigation.
The ACU report, which has been compiled by Sir Paul Condon, will now be reviewed by a panel of the ICC Code of Conduct Commission, under the chairmanship of Lord Hugh Griffiths. As it is a major report the Commission has been expanded from its standard number of three panellists, to five. The panel will comprise of Lord Griffiths, Richie Benaud, Australia, Sir Oliver Popplewell, England, Justice Nasim Shah, Pakistan and Sir Denys Williams from the West Indies. They will meet in London in mid May.
The Commission's judgement, together with the ACU report, will then be passed to ICC President Malcolm Gray, who will submit them to ICC directors. The reports and the issue of corruption will be the high priority items at the June 18th Executive Board meeting in London.
Both the Commission and ACU reports will be released to the media and placed in the public domain. There will be no comment on them by the ICC, Code of Conduct Commission or ACU prior to the Executive Board meeting.
