Courtney Walsh signs up for Weekend of Legends Media Release - 9 May 2001
Courtney Walsh, the leading Test Match wicket-taker of all time, is to take part in the Weekend of Legends at Trent Bridge on June 30 and July 1. The West Indies star has accepted an invitation to captain the Sir Garfield Sobers Invitation XI when they take on the Sir Richard Hadlee XI on the Saturday. "I am honoured to be invited to captain the team," said Walsh. "The players assembled are among the best in the world and it promises to be a wonderful weekend of cricket." Walsh announced his retirement from international cricket during the recent series against Australia after becoming the first player in the history of the game to top 500 Test wickets. He will lead a side including world-class stars like Saeed Anwar, Aravinda De Silva, Lance Klusener and Sanath Jayasuria. The Hadlee XI, captained by Shaun Pollock, will include Shoaib Akhtar, Allan Donald, Inzaman-ul-Haq and Jonty Rhodes. The Sunday fixture will feature a Masters Match between England and Australia, captained by Graham Gooch and Allan Border respectively. Proceeds from the Weekend of Legends will go towards the cost of renovating the Trent Bridge pavilion. Said Notts Chief Executive David Collier: "We are delighted that Courtney Walsh has agreed to take part in what will undoubtedly be a very special weekend. "Tickets for both days have been selling well and bearing in mind that we have kept admission prices at a very reasonable level, we are optimistic that we will fill Trent Bridge on both days." Tickets are now on sale with Double Match Tickets, which cover both days, available from only £20. © CricInfo Ltd.
