Players' body furious at 'ICC snub' FICA Media Release - 23 May 2001
The Officers of the Federation of International Cricketers' Associations (FICA) support in principle the recommendations of Sir Paul Condon's report. Whilst accepting the severity of the problems that face the game of cricket, FICA are greatly encouraged that the report clearly states that ICC should recognise and work with the players and Players' Associations. We agree with the proposals relating to: player education, player security, consistency of contract. FICA would expect to work with the governing bodies to achieve these goals. We strongly agree with the criticisms of the ICC contained in the report. FICA's issue is further highlighted due to the fact that despite the ICC's earlier knowledge of the recommendations within the report, the office bearers of the ICC have chosen to exclude representatives of FICA from the ICC Cricket Committee meeting being held at Lord's between 23–25 May 2001. The main purpose of this meeting is to discuss amendments to the international playing conditions which would remain in place for the next three years. To exclude the views of the players and their representatives reflects the inflexible and high-handed attitude of the administrative and threatens the well-being of the game for the foreseeable future. FICA will continue to lobby the playing members of ICC to explain the benefits of creating a strong working relationship between players and administrators.
