New Zealand make two changes Wisden CricInfo staff - November 28, 2001
PERTH, Australia (Reuters) Out-of-form opener Matthew Bell was dropped for Lou Vincent, who will make his Test debut, and fast bowler Chris Martin replaced injured paceman Daryl Tuffey. Vincent, 23, has played 17 one-day internationals for New Zealand but had been unable to break into the Test side because he prefers to bat in the middle order, where the New Zealanders are already strong. He had been promoted to open the innings because of Bell's poor performances on tour and also because there were no other specialist openers in the squad. Vincent, who was 12th man in the first two Tests, said he was not troubled by the challenge despite the daunting prospect of facing Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie and Brett Lee on the notoriously quick Perth pitch. "I'll bat anywhere, it doesn't worry me at all," Vincent said. "Wearing the black cap means everything to me so I'm going to take the opportunity. At this level of cricket you have to be able to play any type of bowling. It's a huge task but if you can succeed doing the hardest thing possible, you feel like you're half decent." Martin was selected to make his eighth Test appearance after the selectors decided not to gamble on Tuffey, who is still recovering from a hamstring strain. The first two Tests of the three match series ended in draws after being hit by heavy rain. Australia, who were on top in the two previous matches when bad weather intervened, named an unchanged team. Australia - 1 Matthew Hayden, 2 Justin Langer, 3 Ricky Ponting, 4 Mark Waugh, 5 Steve Waugh (capt), 6 Damien Martyn, 7 Adam Gilchrist (wk), 8 Brett Lee, 9 Shane Warne, 10 Jason Gillespie, 11 Glenn McGrath. New Zealand 1 Mark Richardson, 2 Lou Vincent, 3 Mathew Sinclair, 4 Stephen Fleming (capt), 5 Nathan Astle, 6 Craig McMillan, 7 Chris Cairns, 8 Adam Parore (wk), 9 Daniel Vettori, 10 Chris Martin, 11 Shane Bond.
