Captain's Log - a new weekly series from the Gloucestershire skipper
Mark Alleyne - 23 November 2001

Welcome to the first of my weekly columns, in which I intend to give you a real insight on cricket matters within Gloucestershire CCC. The column will reflect my personal feelings and opinions, and does not necessary reflect the Club's stance.

We have now had plenty of time to reflect on the 2001 season, and initially disappointment dominated my thoughts. We fought courageously throughout, with influential players missing at key moments.

As the last week of the season commenced, we had a great chance of achieving First Division status in the CricInfo Championship and retaining our status in the Norwich Union League. However, fate dealt us further blows, first as Jack Russell was involved in a freak accident as he was practicing his wicket keeping. Ian Harvey was then declared unfit to bowl after a heroic performance against Derbyshire the previous game, and this unfortunately coincided with the death of John Bracewell's dad, so John had to return New Zealand. The father of our debutant, Roger Sillence, also died the day before the last game, and he bravely made himself available, taking five wickets on debut. Then, after having Sussex reeling in an impressive first spell, James Averis suffered a severe groin injury that prevented him from bowling again in the match.

I am not making excuses, but I believe that better fortune would have left us in a more enviable position. The really good news is that it showed me that we do not only have winners here, but also courageous youngsters with a wealth of talent. I have got every reason to be excited about 2002, because the blend of cricketers here spells success. The return of the injured, coupled with renewed zest, will make us a great side to watch. The plan is to achieve First Division status in both leagues, and continue our fantastic Cup runs in the other two competitions. This will require total commitment from the players and coaching staff and some good fortune, but we know we have commitment in abundance so we look forward to a hard-fought but successful season.

NEXT WEEK: An insight into the successes of 2001, and what 2002 has in store.
