'An innings of perfection' Wisden CricInfo staff - October 25, 2001
Today we announce the winner of our Sachin Tendulkar competition. Lots of readers felt very strongly that at least one of Sachin's innings should have been included in the Wisden 100 of alltime great Test knocks. So we invited them to put their thoughts into an e-mail, and let us know which of his innings should have been included, and why. There were replies from all over the world, including Saudi Arabia, Nepal and America, as well as England and India. The best entry wins a trip for two to see Sachin bat in a Test anywhere in the world. Here we publish a selection of the responses. One innings kept cropping up: Sachin's unbeaten 155 against Australia at Chennai in 1998, because of the strength of the Australian attack, Tendulkar's battle with cramp, the deteriorating pitch, and the fact that it set up an Indian win. There were also a lot of votes for his 136 against Pakistan in the first Test at Chennai in January 1999 which took India to the brink of victory. Here is a selection of the entries: 155* v Australia at Chennai in 1997-98 "Tendulkar's gut-wrenching, energy-sapping innings was crucial in providing the cushion that eventually allowed the spinners to go all out in the final innings. He batted with spasms, due to the unbearable heat and humidity. But the external factors failed to deter the burning ambition deep inside him to excel." Saeed Mustafa-Ali "Unfazed by temperatures running over 30 degrees Celsius, the oppressive humidity of the coastal metropolis, and cramps in his arm and legs, Tendulkar batted as if his very life depended on that knock." Qaiser Mohammad Ali "That innings demonstrated Tendulkar's brilliance. It was his first Test after his failed stint as captain, so the pressure he was under was immense. The innings allowed him to maintain a psychological advantage over the best team this decade -- which he has maintained ever since." Sudip Roy "Despite all the pressures, he stood firm at the crease with nerves of steel, showed indomitable spirit and played an innings of astonishing belligerence. Kudos to Sachin Tendulkar, the Don of modern cricket." Vinayak Rao Ganagalla "I don't think anybody else in the world would have thought of playing an innings like that." Rangnath Deshpande 136 against Pakistan at Chennai in 1998-99 "Sachin was the only hope for India. The technique and elegance with which he faced the spin attack of Saqlain and the fire of Akram and Akhtar under tremendous pressure, was unlike anything I have ever seen. Not only was it an innings of perfection and class but it came against the best bowling side in the world. It was a masterpiece." Prajakt Tanpure "Even under tremendous pain due to his back, he played with great spirit for India. How can we ever forget that nearly half the runs scored by the team were made by him alone?" Patel Kaizin "I would like to confess that I broke down watching him wage a lonely battle against arch-rivals Pakistan in the one-off Test played in January 1999 when he was writhing in severe back pain and almost carried my country to victory. He put his country above himself unlike other greats." Sunil Surana
