New World Order Wisden CricInfo staff - October 26, 2001
Latest Wisden ODI table Latest ICC rankings table It's back to scratch for the Wisden one-day table, for which the World Cup marked the end of its four-year life-cycle. And, with a blank canvas to work on, we have incorporated one or two changes to give a slightly different slant to the global pecking order. Some things never change, though – Australia, naturally, remain top of the class after their successful defence of the title. India, as one might expect of the defeated World Cup finalists, are in second place, but thereafter things get a little confused. Because of their guest status, all results against Namibia, Holland and Canada have been removed from the reckoning, not to mention the forfeitures by England and New Zealand.
All of which means that, as we thought at the time, West Indies were the biggest losers of the World Cup. Their victories over South Africa and Kenya should have been sufficient to secure a Super Six place and maybe even a semi-final spot. Had New Zealand played in Kenya, they too, would probably have featured in the semis. After their World Cup nightmare Pakistan have shot up from ninth to sixth after their four wins out of four in the Sharjah Cup, while Kenya have already fallen two places after they went without a win in the same competition. Zimbabwe's progression to the final means they swap places at the bottom with Bangladesh, who will be looking to get off the mark in the forthcoming TVS Cup in Dhaka.
