Next Yorkshire captain should be home-grown, says Gough CricInfo - 3 October 2001
Yorkshire's next captain should be a Yorkshireman and not from overseas, according to the county's international fast bowler Darren Gough. David Byas' retirement after leading Yorkshire to the county championship in the summer has left a shortage of candidates to take over, as most of their senior players are likely to be contracted to England, therefore missing most of the season. Darren Lehmann of Australia is regarded as the man most likely to succeed, but Gough has reservations about his candidature, especially as another Aussie, Wayne Clark, is already the team's coach. Gough, who has received some criticism at Headingley for the amount of time he plays for England, told Sky Sports: "I don't think we should have an overseas coach and an overseas captain for the season." "Darren Lehmann is likely to do it because there is no-one else. It should be a Yorkshire born player but unfortunately there is no-one crying out to do it." © CricInfo Ltd.
