ACB Trans-Tasman captains gather in Brisbane
Australian Cricket Board - 31 October 2001

Former Australian and New Zealand captains gather for a gala luncheon in Brisbane on Friday 2 November to celebrate 55 years of Trans-Tasman cricket rivalry.

Australian captains Bill Brown and Allan Border will join New Zealand counterparts Walter Hadlee, Glenn Turner, Jeremy Coney and Martin Crowe at the 400-seat Sheraton Hotel function.

The event, staged by the Australian Cricket Board (ACB), Queensland Cricket and the Australian Cricketers' Association, is sponsored by KPMG.

The six captains form an elite group of cricket luminaries.

Brown and Hadlee (father of Sir Richard) captained their countries in the first Test played between Australia and New Zealand, staged in Wellington in 1945-46.

Crowe (5444 runs at an average of 45.37) is New Zealand's highest Test run-scorer.

Coney (2668 runs at 37.57) is New Zealand's 11th highest Test run-scorer and the last New Zealand captain to win a Test series in Australia (1985-86).

Turner has scored more first-class runs and hundreds than any other New Zealander (34,346 runs at 49.7 with 103 three-figure scores).

Border holds world-records for most Test runs (11,174 runs at 50.56), most Test appearances (156), most Tests as captain (93) and most consecutive Tests (153).

Hosted by former Australian rugby union captain Andrew Slack, the function will draw fascinating stories of Trans-Tasman rivalry as the captains reminisce during a panel discussion.

Classic scenes from past Australia/New Zealand series will be aired and valuable official memorabilia will go under the auctioneer's hammer.

Speaking about the event, ACB Chairman Bob Merriman said:

"Australia and New Zealand have produced many memorable Test cricket moments over the years. Cricket fans have had the pleasure of seeing some outstanding individual performances with bat and ball, and series between the nations have always been competitive.

"Guests at the Captains' Luncheon will hear many stories of Trans-Tasman rivalry and it acts as a great prelude to the first Orange Test between Australia and New Zealand, which begins in Brisbane next Thursday."
