Netherlands beat Canada in exiciting Six Nations opener
CI - 8 April 2002

In an exciting opening match of the Six Nations Challenge, Canada squandered a fine start to let the Netherlands reach 211. In reply, the Canadians fell just short, despite good innings from Nick Degroot and captain Joe Harris. A run out and some hostile fast bowling from Sanjay Thuraisingam had the ICC Trophy Champions reeling at 17/3. nick Statham helped the innings towards respectability, but another run-out and tight bowling from Joseph, Davison and Degroot had the number ten bat Schiferli to the wicket with 8 wickets down and only 87 on the board. However he and number 9 bat Roland Lefebvre seized the initiative from the Canadians with a 91 run 9th wicket partnership. When Lefebvre was stumped off Degroot, Schiferli accompanied by last man Khan added another 33 invaluable runs to take the total to 211. Schiferli was particualry hard on Harris who conceded 25 runs off his three overs.

In reply, Canada got off to a good start until Schiferli got into the act again, dismissing Samad, Chumney and Billicliff in rapid succession. Degroot (54) and Harris (63) took the total to 103 before Degroot fell to spinner Esmeijer, who quickly accounted for Diwan and Davison. Bagai and Harris took Canada within striking distance of a win, but wickets fell as Canada tried to up the scoring rate. Harris fell to Khan in the 48th over, last man out for a fine 63, with Canada 16 runs short. Schiferli had the fine figures of 4/35 off his 10 overs, and was clearly the man of the match.
