Tudor calls the tune as Sussex stutter
Stephen Lamb - 20 April 2002

Alex Tudor consolidated Surrey's grip on the second day of their Frizzell Championship Division One match against Sussex. Surrey declared this morning at 575/8 after Ally Brown made 177 in the first knock of his benefit year, and Nadeem Shahid 150. Tudor then took four wickets as Sussex closed on 308/9, Michael Yardy making 93.

An innings of 89 from Andrew Symonds maintained Kent's momentum against Hampshire at Canterbury. Chris Tremlett bagged four scalps as Kent eventually outscored even Surrey's high total, declaring at 577/7. John Crawley has anchored Hampshire's reply in his first Championship innings for the county; at the close he had reached 56 out of Hampshire 136/2.

Lancashire surrendered a 110-run lead to Leicestershire as David Byas began his Old Trafford career with a duck, lbw to another evergreen, Phil DeFreitas. He took 6-101 as the home side were bowled out for 275, with Alec Swann making 80 and Graham Lloyd 51. An unbeaten 37 from Darren Maddy had helped Leicestershire to 94/3, a lead of 204, when bad light ended play early for the day.

In Division Two, Durham are already facing defeat after they were forced to follow on. An unbeaten 66 from wicket-keeper David Nash enabled Middlesex to reach 347 at Chester-le-Street. Simon Cook, Ashley Noffke and Phil Tufnell then shared the wickets as Durham were bundled out for 160. They have fared little better in their second innings, although Martin Love is still there on 57 as Durham go into day three on 140/5.

Derbyshire have taken a firm grip at Cardiff, bowling Glamorgan out for 175 to take a first-innings lead of 42. Dominic Cork finished with 6-51 and a century from Stephen Stubbings propelled Derbyshire to 353/4, an overall lead of 395. Andrew Gait made 80 and Michael Di Venuto 62.

Andy Bichel (5-74) kept Gloucestershire under pressure in the two sessions of play possible at New Road. After a delayed start Worcestershire were dismissed for 333 (Jon Lewis 6-77), and New Zealander Craig Spearman then made an immediate impact for Gloucestershire. He made 111 but apart from Matt Windows (60) he found little support. The visitors closed on 233/6.
