Surrey in total control against Yorkshire Ralph Dellor - 25 April 2002
In the feature match of the second round of Frizzell County Championship matches, Surrey were in a totally dominant position against Yorkshire at the close of the second day. Mark Butcher with 83 and Ian Ward, who scored 70, got the innings under way with a partnership worth 161. A stand of 137 for the third wicket ended with Mark Ramprakash out for 65, and Alec Stewart went on to 96 before he fell for the second time this season in the nineties. Although Steve Kirby took five wickets, Surrey reached 510 to lead by the little matter of 370. Matters got worse for Yorkshire, losing two wickets without reducing that deficit in the eight balls bowled before the close. Leicestershire were finally bowled out for 428 at the Rose Bowl – a total to which Hampshire's batsmen offered little in reply. John Crawley continued his good form with an innings of 80, but Darren Maddy took four wickets as the home side were reduced to 245 for 8 at the close and face a sizeable deficit. Somerset's lead against Sussex at Hove does not look like being as large as at one time seemed likely. A century opening partnership between Matthew Wood (54) and Jamie Cox (65) saw Somerset on their way and most of the other batsmen chipped in, notably Peter Bowler who fell for 94. At the close Somerset were 380 for 8 - a lead of 43. Alan Richardson picked up five wickets and there were four for Dougie Brown as Warwickshire bowled out Lancashire for 251 at Edgbaston to take a first innings lead of 46. Top scorer for Lancashire was Graham Lloyd with 80. In their second innings, Warwickshire relied heavily on Nick Knight to extend their lead to 170 at the close. He was out, though, for 49 and Warwickshire are 124 for 7. In Division Two, a splendid century from Durham's Nicky Peng with stout support from the tail confined Derbyshire to a lead of just five runs on first innings. There were five wickets for Dominic Cork. In their second innings, Derbyshire lost wickets at regular intervals, with a top score of 46 coming from Michael Di Venuto, and do not like setting Durham too stiff a target to win. They were 190 for 9 at the close.
Angus Fraser might be bowing out of county cricket, but he is not going without showing he can still cut the mustard. After Middlesex had been bowled out for 462, with Greg Smith and Richard Logan each taking four wickets, Fraser stepped in to take 5 for 61 as Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 159. Only Darren Bicknell offered serious resistance with an innings of 62. Following on, Nottinghamshire were 90 for 1 at the close. A stand of 48 for the last wicket between Mark Alleyne and Jon Lewis helped Gloucestershire to a first innings total of 379, with the captain undefeated on 142 at the end. There were four wickets for Jon Dakin. Essex were reduced to 136 for 3 in reply before Andy Flower joined opener Darren Robinson in a fourth wicket partnership worth 164. Flower was out for 91 just before the close, by which time Essex had reached 305 for 4 with Robinson 127 not out. Worcestershire extended their innings to 524 before declaring with eight wickets down. David Leatherdale contributed 154 of those runs and Kabir Ali scored 51 not out at number ten in the order. There were four wickets for John Blain. But even that total might not guarantee a first innings lead as Mike Hussey and Mal Loye made full use of a batsman's paradise. At stumps, both were on 120 and Northamptonshire had reached 254 without loss. © CricInfo
