Wins for Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Middlesex Stephen Lamb - 27 April 2002
Leicestershire completed an emphatic victory over Hampshire in the Frizzell County Championship to become the first visiting team in the competition to win at The Rose Bowl. Darren Maddy (5-37) and Devon Malcolm (3-39) were the main destroyers as Hampshire were bowled out for 146 in their second innings, leaving William Kendall high and dry on 53 and giving Leicestershire victory by an innings and 9 runs. Sussex drew with Somerset at Hove after the visitors, set 333 to win, finished on 94/2 with skipper Jamie Cox unbeaten on 40. Earlier the Sussex captain Chris Adams made 101 and Robin Martin-Jenkins 86 in Sussex's second-innings total of 396/7 declared. The day's cliffhanger was at Derby, where Durham were bowled out just three runs short of victory. Chasing 235, Durham had looked to be coasting at 187/2, but were then skittled by Dominic Cork (5-54) and Mohammad Ali (3-69). After starting the season as outsiders, Derbyshire have won their first two matches. Middlesex head the Second Division after starting their Championship season with consecutive victories. Nottinghamshire were overwhelmed at Lord's by an innings and 31 runs. The Queensland quickie Ashley Noffke took 7-100 for Middlesex, as well as forcing Richard Logan to retire hurt after he was hit on the hand. An unbeaten hundred from Kim Barnett was the highlight as Gloucestershire drew with Essex at Chelmsford. After yesterday's wash-out the visitors declared on 195/4, with Jon Dakin and Joe Grant sharing the wickets. A draw was also the outcome at Northampton, where Northamptonshire eventually declared their first innings at 614/5, with Russell Warren unbeaten on 150. © CricInfo Ltd.
