Bali Defeat Jakarta
Cricket action from Indonesia

In the first official
National League Cricket match played in Indonesia, Bali inflicted a convincing
defeat upon the more favoured Jakarta side. The latter flew down for the match
on Sunday the 28 th of July at the Bukit oval as the International Cricket Conference
program for cricket development in Indonesia gets into full swing. The win was
all the more meritorious for the fact that 8 indgenous Indonesian players played
in the Bali side. They were Soni Hawoe,Agus Abadi, Zachariah Awang, Umbu Frenki
Shoni, Wayan Suandi,Yeri Rosangnya, Wellinson Soni 2, and Ozzi. These were aided
by 3 expats,Dan Metcalf, Bali cricket legend Ray Elliot, and Paul Jarvis, who
captained the side. Jakarta ,under the astute captaincy of Sachin, were far from
disgraced but began badly by losing the toss. They were subsequently asked to
bat on a pitch of variable bounce and pace and struggled to reach a total of 117
from only 28 of their allotted 50 overs. Soni Hawoe ripped into the heart of their
batting with a splendid 4-39 from 8 overs. He was ably assisted by Soni 2 with
2-11 from 4 and Zac with 1-26 from 7. However it was Umbu Frenki Shoni who snuffed
any chance of a recovery with 3-4 from his last 3 overs of left arm medium swing
bowling, to give him 3-23 from 6 for the innings.
After a solid
start of 40 by openers Prakesh and Rob Hindmarsh, the Jakarta batting showed
little resistance apart from a stubborn 38 from captain Sachin. They always
appeared ill at ease on a wicket to which they were not accustomed.. The Bali
side took 6 catches, including 2 to keeper Dan Metcalf and a couple of rippers
by Wayan on the boundary and Ray Elliot in close. Greatly relieved at not having
to field for 50 overs, the Bali side began their run chase of 117 with Agus
and Yeri. After a competent start the former was bowled by Andrew Richards for
5 , and the latter by Jim Howlett for 14. However Yeri stuck around to put on
51 for the 2nd wicket with Ray Elliot. Ray went on to make 48 with his usual
tenacity and astute judgement. He was finally bowled by Pakistan Vice Consul
Maozi, whose competence and demeanour ,lent a stamp of class to the game. Dan
Metcalf steered Bali home with 21 not out, and Soni was undefeated on 9 to give
the Bali side an emphatic victory by 7 wickets. Bali will now meet the winners
of the other semi final in Jakarta on August 18, to decide the National Champions
for 2002. Mick Catoni, Paul Ingram, Geoff Atkinson and young Suda Arsa must
be thanked for their efforts in scoring and umpiring, and of course I.C.F. President
Alan Wilson was everpresent behind the scenes, tying up loose ends. filling
in potholes, and as ever, fortifying the structure of cricket in Indonesia. Sachin
and his boys are to be congratulated on the great spirit in which they played
the game. A few drinks at the match post mortems revealed that he and deputy
Deepak are producing a half hour program for television in Jakarta which will
include Bali. I cannot emphasise enough the importance of this for the development
of the game in this country. To inspire great Indonesian players of the future,
the kids of this country must have something to aspire to. They ,and their parents
must see the International dimensions of the game and the media is the obvious
vehicle to this end.

Speaking of kids,the
Junior League finals are on at the Bukit next Sunday-August 4 starting at 9.00am,
followed by presentations. After 4 months of solid comp with hard ball and pads,
Kuta beat Sidakarya on Saturday in the preliminary final. They move into the final
against Jimbaran next Sunday. Can the big improvers from Kuta-Aris Nasution and
Deni Muliano stem the brilliance of Suda Arsa and the dashing Putra Dermawan.
The expat Junior side-The Brave hearts are contesting for 3rd position against
Sidakarya. Ring Jo Freeman on 286415 if your kid wants a game-2 spots available.
